1-HKUST Student Enrichment Activities Fund (1-HKUST Fund)
Effective from Fall 2019, Student Enrichment Activities Fund (SEA Fund) will be merged with President's 1-HKUST Student Life Award and become 1-HKUST Student Enrichment Activities Fund (1-HKUST Fund).
 
The purpose of the 1-HKUST Student Enrichment Activities Fund (1-HKUST Fund) is to financially support student groups or individuals to organize or participate, on a voluntary basis, in activities or projects that disseminate at least one of the following learning outcomes:
  • enhance our campus community engagement, multicultural awareness and strengthen the integration between student groups and individuals (students, staff and faculty)
  • engage students in a process of holistic development that connects their body, mind and spirit, or enriches their global outlook
  • enhance students' development through participation in a competition, program or performance, which at the same time cultivates a vibrant and caring learning community on campus
  • facilitate the development of cultural diversity experiences and student engagement activities and fosters a greater sense of belonging amongst the HKUST student community.
Application Guidelines
WHO CAN APPLY 
Full-time students, undergraduates or postgraduates, individuals or student societies* are eligible to apply for subsidy from the Fund. The proposed activities or projects must achieve at least one learning outcome stated above. Past activities or projects will not be considered.
 
* Except SU-affiliated societies, group names should not be used for the project name or the applicant name. The applicant should be the PIC of the project rather than a group.
 
 
HOW TO APPLY
If you wish to apply for the Fund, you should write a project proposal which includes a plan of income and possible subsidies granted for the project, expenditure plan and the amount of subsidy expected. Before you submit proposals, you should check your proposal with the selection criteria of the Fund. Proposals will be evaluated based on the extent to which they meet the selection criteria. WHEN TO APPLY
Proposals will be assessed in the main application exercise in Fall semester. Subject to availability of funding, a second round of application may be offered in Spring. 

 
Amount of Subsidy
Normally, the amount of subsidy will only cover part of the total expenses. However, full subsidy may be granted on exceptional cases. Expenses which may be considered include: program or registration fee, honorarium, equipment, consumables, promotion, printing and administrative expenses. Depending on availability of funds, overseas traveling and accommodation expenses may or may not be considered.
 
Subsidy is considered by the selection panel according to the project proposal submitted during application. Should there be any change to the submitted proposal, project organizers has the responsibility to inform the secretariat as soon as possible, and amount of subsidy maybe adjusted as a result. The fund reserves the right to reject subsidizing a project if the actual project organized deviates significantly with the submitted proposal.
 
Normally, all subsidy should be claimed within 1 month from the project completion date by submitting completion report along with all expense receipts or documents to the secretariat. Otherwise, any approved subsidy will be deemed as forfeited without further notice.

Applications will be assessed taking into consideration:
  • Community need: whether the proposal identifies and addresses a community need
  • Originality: new and creative ideas will be given priority
  • Feasibility: whether the effort is achievable within the proposed time frame and budget
  • Impact: the potential impact of the proposal on campus community
 
Project Completion Report
FAQ
1) Is it on-going and available every year?
The fund is on-going and available every year. The exact amount that will be allocated to the fund will vary slightly from year to year.
 
2) Will student societies have priority?
Student societies and individual students will be treated equally in the selection process. Applications will be considered based on individual merit.
 
3) Does the fund cover students going overseas for case competitions or study tour?
Maybe. The fund is quite limited and the amount may not be sufficient to significantly sponsor overseas trips which can be quite expensive.
 
4) Is the fund for academic purpose?
The purpose of the fund is for student enrichment mainly outside the classroom.
 
5) Will profit-making projects be considered?
The projects must be non-profit making, student-led and voluntary. Commercial elements are prohibited and will not be considered. Students can collaborate with commercial firms, but the projects must be initiated and led by students.
6) What is the range of subsidy that will be given to a particular project?
To encourage students to be committed to the project, the subsidy will only cover partial expenses. The amount provided will be substantial enough to help complete the project with some financial assistance from other resources.
 
7) Is there any requirement for the project duration?
There is no specific duration required. The event can be 2 hours long or it can be a year-long project.
 
8) How long will the result of the application be released?
The result of the application will be released within one month after the application deadline.
 
9) Can voluntary work including fundraising of items be included in the activity?
Yes. However, the fund cannot be used as direct donation.
 
10) What if my application is accepted, but the activity is not successful?
If the activity cannot be successfully completed, the subsidy will not be awarded.
 
11) Is it necessary to provide proof of attendance in activities?
Yes. It is important to submit enrollment or registration form along with your application.
 
12) I have already started a project. Can I apply for funding for this project?
Students should apply for the fund beforehand. Past events will not be considered and subsidies will not be awarded retrospectively.
