Introduction

Health and Fitness Assessments (HFAs) are required activities of Healthy Lifestyle Course (HLTH1010). The assessments comprise of the Entry Health & Fitness Assessment and Intensive Physical Fitness Assessment.

Entry Health & Fitness Assessment

The Entry Health & Fitness Assessment is organized to help new undergraduate students to understand their current general health conditions and body composition conditions. The assessment items include:

a. Measuring Resting Blood Pressure and assessing the Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors for the General Health Conditions.
   
b. Measuring the Body Height, Weight and Waist Circumference for understanding Body Composition (Calculation of Body Mass Index and Estimation of Percent Body Fat).

 

Intensive Physical Fitness Assessment

The Intensive Physical Fitness Assessment aims to help students to understand their physical fitness conditions. The assessment items for fitness performance include:

- 3-minute Step Test (Cardio-Respiratory Fitness)
- Grip Strength Test (Muscular Fitness – Strength)
- Cadence Curl-up Test (Muscular Fitness – Endurance)
- Vertical Jump Test (Muscular Fitness – Power)
- Modified Back-Saver Sit-and-Reach Test (Flexibility)
- Flamingo Balance Test (Motor Fitness – Balance)
- 10 x 5 Meters Shuttle Run Test (Motor Fitness – Agility)

The assessments will take about 2 hours. When joining the assessments, please put on sports wear (shorts/ pants, T-shirt) and non-marking sports shoes.

The data collected in the assessments will serve as a preliminary screening for health risks. The data will be used for the preparation of student’s personal reports for own reference. With the assistance from a qualified fitness consultant, students can also use this report to develop an individual exercise plan to achieve specific fitness goals. The aggregate information will provide information to the university management to know about students' wellness status for planning curriculum and services.

Upon completion of the required assessments, students will obtain 2 course hours attendance and receive a Health and Fitness Report via email in the Fall Term. This report will provide information on your current health and fitness conditions as well as some suggestions on improvement of your health and fitness. Please note the information provided are not intended to be a medical diagnosis which should be done by a medical professional.

Student who has been advised by medical doctor to avoid vigorous exercise or not to take part in the Health & Fitness Assessments, should contact the Course Office at 2358-8586 or email hlstyle@ust.hk to arrange an appointment with our Course Advisors. Course Advisors will help to review the health and fitness situation, to advise on the choice of physical activities to improve health and fitness as well as to provide support in the choice of events in fulfilling the HLTH1010 course requirements.

The Health & Fitness Assessments will take approximately 2 hours. Students are advised to take the assessments at the S. H. Ho Sports Hall on one of the following days:

Online Registration via "Student Center" in MyPortal will be available from 21 August 2017. Students who cannot attend the assessments at the above dates should contact the Course Office at 2358-8586 or email hlstyle@ust.hk as soon as possible.

 

Adverse Weather Arrangement for the Assessments on 8, 9 & 10 Sept. 2017

The whole event or part of it will be cancelled in case of the typhoon signal no. 8 or above or black rainstorm warning is hoisted. Alternative arrangements are listed as follows:

1. If the typhoon signal no. 8 or above or black rainstorm warning is hoisted at or after 12 noon on 8 September 2017, the Health & Fitness Assessments on 8, 9 & 10 September 2017 will be postponed to 15, 16 & 17 September 2017.  On-line registration will be open at 12 noon on 12 September 2017.
2. If the typhoon signal no. 8 or above or black rainstorm warning is lowered before 12 noon on 8 September 2017, the Health & Fitness Assessments on 8, 9 & 10 September 2017 will be held as scheduled.
  2.1 If the Health & Fitness Assessments is held as scheduled on 8 September 2017 but the typhoon signal No. 8 or above or black rainstorm warning is still hoisted at 6:30am on 9 September 2017, the Health & Fitness Assessments on 9 September 2017 will be cancelled.  Students who register a session on 9 September 2017 are encouraged to join the Assessments on 10 September 2017 at the same timeslot. The Assessments will be expected to last for a longer period.
  2.2 If the Health & Fitness Assessments is held as scheduled on 8 & 9 September 2017 but the typhoon signal No. 8 or above or black rainstorm warning is still hoisted at 6:30am on 10 September 2017, the Health & Fitness Assessments on 10 September 2017 will be cancelled.  Make-up session will be arranged in late October 2017.  Please watch out email notification for details.

 

Special Session of Health & Fitness Assessments on 30 September 2017 (Sat)

Students who did not attend the Health & Fitness Assessments (HFAs) on 8, 9 & 10 September 2017 MUST join the Special Session on Saturday, 30 September 2017 (Sat) from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm (any two-hour session during this period) at LG1031 to complete this compulsory event.

Adverse weather arrangement for the Special Session of Health and Fitness Assessments, 2:00 pm - 5:00pm at LG1031, on 30 September 2017

The Special Session will be canceled only when a Typhoon Signal No. 8 or Black Rainstorm Warning is in effect at or after 11:45.

In case of cancellation, an email for further arrangement will be sent out in next week.

 

Special Session of Health & Fitness Assessments on 28 November 2017 (Tue)

Students who did not attend the Health & Fitness Assessments (HFAs) on 8, 9 & 10 September 2017 or 30 September 2017 MUST join the Special Session on Tuesday, 28 November 2017 (Tue) at 3 :00 pm at LG4204 to complete this compulsory event.

Notes to Participants

1.

Participants MUST wear sports wear and non-marking sports shoes.

Participants are advised to store their personal belongings at the lockers at the LG3 Changing Rooms. A HK$5 coin, which is retrievable after the key is returned, will be required for using the locker.

 

 

2.

Please bring your Student ID Card and report to the Registration Counter inside the S. H. Ho Sports Hall.

 

 

3.

When joining the Assessments, please start from Station 1 – Blood Pressure Measurement and then proceed to the subsequent stations in order.

 

 

4.

In order to obtain the accurate assessment result, participants should NOT perform exercise before taking the 3-minute Step Test (Station 4). To avoid possible injuries, participants are advised to perform stretching exercises AFTER taking the 3-minute Step Test.

 

 

5.

Upon completion of all assessment items, please present your Individual Record Form and Student ID Card to the Recording Counter. Remember to collect your Student ID Card before you leave the venue.

Q. What will I get after completion of the Health & Fitness Assessments?
A. You will attain 2 course hours to your HLTH1010 Course record around mid September and a Health and Fitness Report will be prepared and sent to you via email around November. This report will provide you with information on your current health and fitness conditions. It will also give you some suggestions on improvement of your health and fitness. Please note the information provided are not intended to be a medical diagnosis which should be done by a medical professional.
   
Q. How will the data collected in the assessments be used?
A.

Q. What should I do if my medical doctor suggested me to avoid vigorous exercise?
A.

You should contact the Course Office. Our Course Advisors will help you to review your health and fitness situation. We will provide support in the choice of sports skill classes in fulfilling the sports skill class module requirement and advise you in the choice of fitness activities to improve your health and fitness.

   
Q. Should I come to the Health & Fitness Assessments if my medical doctor advised me not to do so?
A.

Yes you should go to the assessment venue where you can talk to the Course Advisor to assess whether you should take the assessments. Alternatively, you can go to the Course Office to arrange an appointment with our Course Advisors.
